Internal assurance toolkit: community of practice event

POSTED ON 11th March 2016
This week Worcestershire County Council (WCC) hosted the second Community of Practice meeting at County Hall. This interactive session included representatives from a range of councils, who shared experiences of using the Internal Assurance Toolkit and developed their skills and understanding of how to get the most out of the approach within their authority.
The meeting was introduced by Sander Kristell, corporate director for commercial and change at WCC, who provided an engaging overview of the context and challenges within the county. This provided the backdrop for a detailed case study and discussion that explored WCC’s first use of the IAT for a ‘hybrid’ review (led by an experienced Local Partnerships’ review team leader, with the rest of the team being new WCC reviewers). As well as providing real value to the transport programme that was reviewed, the council learned valuable lessons about how to apply IAT in the future.
The meeting also explored:
- Improvements to the approach and materials
- The next iteration of a new self-assessment tool, designed to provide insight into the delivery capability of an authority at a strategic level. We hope to launch this – the Delivery Capability Status– during 2016-17
Thank you to all those participated in this event and also the first IAT Community of Practice event in September 2015. The next event will take place in September 2016.
